Indications

Urinary tract infection, site not specified
Urinary tract infection following abortive pregnancy
Paediatric use

Contraindications

Nitrofurantoin allergy
Disorders of porphyrin metabolism
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency anaemia
Adverse reaction to nitrofurantoin

Prescriber Cautions

Not for infants under 3
Anaemias should be corrected before treatment with NITROFURANTOIN
Regular liver function tests during prolonged treatment with NITROFURANTOIN
Regular lung function tests during prolonged treatment with NITROFURANTOIN
Electrolyte imbalance should be corrected before treatment with NITROFURANTOIN
CSM/CHM warning regarding hepatotoxicity with NITROFURANTOIN

Liver Disease

Renal Failure

Avoid NITROFURANTOIN in mild renal failure

NITROFURANTOIN - risk of peripheral neuropathy in renal failure

Pregnancy

NITROFURANTOIN may produce neonatal haemolysis if used at term
Avoid NITROFURANTOIN in the 3rd TRIMESTER of pregnancy

Lactation

Small amounts of NITROFURANTOIN in breast milk
NITROFURANTOIN - small risk of haemolysis in G6PD deficient infants
